How do
conceptions of the child differ across time and space? What does childhood look
like in different cultures around the world? In this course, we will
investigate this fascinating period of life through an anthropological lens,
paying particular attention to cultural and historical variation. We will learn
about where some of our modern conceptions of “the child” come from and discuss
where they might be headed in the future. Topics will include gender, language
socialization, rites of passage, marketing, schooling, and more. Approved for
University Studies (Integration - Strand J). Prerequisite(s): Completion of all
lower division University Studies requirements.
