History 251 is a survey of the political, social, cultural, economic, and diplomatic history of the United States since 1877.  The course will explore four interlocking themes: the development and evolution of a system of corporate capitalism; the expanding and contracting roles of the federal government; the promise of equality, and the struggles to make that promise a reality for all Americans; and the evolving relationship between Americans and the wider world.

Upon the successful completion of History 251, students will possess a basic factual knowledge of the history of the United States since 1877, exhibit improved critical thinking skills, demonstrate enhanced analytic writing abilities, and display superior oral communication skills.  Assignments will require students to know the basic historical narrative and provide analysis.  In short, students will be expected to do history.

History 251 contributes to History Knowledge Outcome 1 (Foundations), and Skill Outcomes 1 (Information Literacy) and 2 (Written and Oral Communication).
