History/Political Science 454 examines the history of relations between Latin American nations and the United States.  We will focus on the impact of Latin America's nationalist, anti-imperialist, class, racial, and economic struggles on foreign relations, while recognizing the asymmetrical hegemonic relationships between the United States and other nations in the hemisphere.  We will also explore U.S. policies in terms of the domestic and global contexts within which leaders defined national economic, strategic, and ideological interests and their regional policy objectives.

Upon the successful completion of History/Political Science 454, students will possess an advanced understanding of U.S.-Latin American relations, exhibit improved critical thinking skills, demonstrate enhanced analytic writing abilities, and display superior oral communication skills.  Assignments will require students to know the basic historical narrative and provide analysis.

History/Political Science 454 contributes to History Knowledge Outcome 2 (Advanced Historical Understanding), and Skill Outcomes 1 (Information Literacy) and 2 (Written and Oral Communication).  It contributes to all Political Science Outcomes.
