History 251 is a survey of the political, social, cultural, economic, and diplomatic history of the United States since 1877. The course will explore four interlocking themes: the development and evolution of a system of corporate capitalism; the expanding and contracting roles of the federal government; the promise of equality, and the struggles to make that promise a reality for all Americans; and the evolving relationship between Americans and the wider world.
