This introductory drawing course is designed to help students develop their perceptive awareness, hand/eye coordination, and aesthetic sensibility. Through a variety of projects, students will gain experience manipulating line, value, proportion, spatial relationships and composition. Critiques of finished work will help students acquire a technical and critical vocabulary. Students will use the majority of the class time for both short and long term project production. Expect to complete at the very least three hours of work outside of class each week (and sometimes much more than that). You are also required to maintain a sketchbook for this class. We will focus on observational drawing because this is the surest method to sharpening visual perception through the heightening of one’s awareness of space, edge, form, proportion and light. Drawing is a learned skill that only improves with regular, rigorous practice and a willingness to explore new ways of working. Please be ready to move beyond your old habits and any stylization you have developed. Focus and determination will ensure your progress.
