In this course on medical anthropology, we will examine the diverse ways in which health, illness, and healing are interpreted and experienced across the globe.  We will approach our inquiry from a sociocultural perspective as we investigate the causes of health and illness and the medical systems that exist in all cultures to assist people in coping with all kinds of maladies.  What is viewed as illness and what is seen to produce good health varies across cultures, peoples, and socioeconomic groupings; as such, we will examine the social construction of health and the social production of health.
