Course Introduction

In this course we will learn about the genre of the novel through our reading of two very interesting texts, Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro and Kindred by Octavia Butler. In the second half of the quarter, we will learn about the genre of poetry through some wonderful poetry that spans a variety of forms and voices.

Course Objectives

  • Students will be able to distinguish between a good reading and a bad reading in literature
  • Students will be able to define and recognize affective and intentional fallacies
  • Students will be able to identify elements specific to the genre of the novel
  • Students will be able to identify elements specific to the genre of poetry
  • Students will learn close reading techniques in order to become careful readers of literary texts
  • Students will gain an appreciation of the various genres explored in class
  • Students will learn how to structure effective, short, analytic papers
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to effectively use the grammatical and stylistic conventions of Dominant Academic/professional Discourse (DAD) in writing. 
  • Students will learn about the complexities of the human condition, including racism and anti-racism
