Welcome to PS324 Political Campaigns. I hope the class will provide valuable insight into the varying philosophies, tactics, and strategies of campaigns. Campaigns are as varied as the politicians who occupy the seats and the different consultants, friends, and family who advise them. The course will not prescribe a correct campaign method, but hopefully, it will equip you with tools, tactics, and strategies to utilize and think about as a voter, volunteer, consultant, or candidate. Also, note that despite the best-laid plans for a campaign, it is rare that a textbook campaign is executed. Usually, unforeseen issues in a campaign require modifications to tactics and strategies, and campaigns must stay liquid; this class will take the same approach and may occasionally pivot with the political winds to remain relevant.

The class contains students from varying political viewpoints. Please remember the purpose of the course is not to convince others of your political viewpoint but to learn from each other in an educational setting. I want to encourage frank discussion in a safe space for each person. Your opinions and perspectives are valued, and it's important that we all feel heard and respected. We will likely discuss issues, tactics, and strategies that you or the entire class may find reprehensible; please remember we must discuss difficult things because campaigns have employed them. You will take on advising roles contrary to your political philosophy, embrace the opportunity, and learn from it. Try to acknowledge your personal biases and move beyond them. I ask that you assume good intent from me and your fellow students. Please treat each other with respect.

You will hear from several high-profile speakers during this course. We have tentative commitments from statewide officials and high-level campaign strategists. They have agreed to speak to the class for educational purposes and as a personal courtesy to SOU and me. They are coming to educate and share their viewpoint on campaigning and elections. Their presentations are not an opportunity to try to argue, debate, or embarrass them; it is your opportunity to learn from them and gain their insight and perspective based on their political success.
