SPED 520 Law and Policy; is a course that addresses the (EAHCA), 99-457 (EHA Amendments), 101-476 (IDEA), 105-17 (IDEA ’97), 108- 446 (IDEA 2004), and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 will be included, as well as major litigation since 1954. This course includes knowledge of the requirements of Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015 legislation and its consequences for special education. After completion of this course, students will have a working knowledge of the legally mandated components of a special education program within the confines of federal and state guidelines, be familiar with major case law affecting the provision of educational services to disabled children, and be able to discuss basic legal requirements with colleagues and others in the district.
