PSY318 is a 1-credit self-exploration course that provides an opportunity to experience and learn about individual counseling. Participants serve as "practice clients" for SOU Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) first-year graduate students. Each participant is paired with a CMHC counselor-in-training and is expected to meet for an hour each week with that graduate student throughout the term. Graduate students receive weekly supervision so that they may further develop their counseling skills during these sessions. Course participants are invited to discuss matters that currently concern them, particularly those matters that are associated with personal growth and development and optimal wellness (e.g., adjusting to university life, coping with change, relationship enhancement, communication skills, values exploration, choosing a major, improving self-esteem, assertiveness skill development, managing loss, problem resolution, roommate issues, cultural concerns, family conflicts, developing new coping mechanisms, exploring future life directions and questions such as Who am I? What do I want in life? What gives my life meaning and purpose?).
***PSY318 is not intended to provide psychotherapy. It is strongly recommended that you make arrangements to work with a licensed professional counselor (LPC), licensed psychologist, or related licensed psychotherapist if you are experiencing immediate, serious, and/or chronic problems that impede your overall health and wellness. Please consult with practitioners at the SOU Student Health and Wellness Center for assistance with addressing concerns of this nature.
