Course Content

This course introduces students to fundamental techniques and approaches in painting, with a focus on still life and master copies. Emphasis will be placed on working from direct observation and using various color palettes, from earth tones to complementary colors. Assignments are designed to build technical skill, develop visual sensitivity, and strengthen compositional understanding. Presentations will be given to show students various painting techniques and materials and to provide visual examples. Collages and color charts will also be an integral aspect of the learning process to build fundamental skills in understanding color and composition.  Students should expect to spend time outside of class on preparation and homework.

Course Objectives

  • Develop confidence in direct visual decision-making.

  • Learn to compose and structure a painting through color, focusing on space, volume, light.

  • Accurately observe and represent relationships of hue, value, and temperature.

  • Gain fluency and independence in painting through regular practice and multiple assignments.

  • Strengthen technical and compositional skills.

  • Increase appreciation of painting through visual analysis and discussion.
