Anime and Manga: Trauma and Community (Horror)

This Composition II course explores how horror anime and manga transform fear, trauma, and the grotesque into powerful storytelling. From body horror to psychological dread and cursed spaces, we’ll examine how creators turn anxiety into art and the uncanny into meaning. Through writing and discussion, you’ll analyze how monsters reflect cultural fears, how terror exposes social fractures, and how horror invites us to confront what we’d rather avoid. This class asks you to consider why we seek out stories that disturb us—and how shared fascination with fear can create unexpected communities of interpretation and connection.
